Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In this issue
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Wearing pink can start a conversation, but the most useful next step is personal: ask a health professional when breast screening makes sense for you. A mammogram can find cancer before symptoms appear. Screening does not prevent cancer. The right plan depends on your age, medical history and risk.
For women at average risk, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends a mammogram every two years from ages 40 through 74. People at higher risk may need a different plan. Ask your clinician what is right for you.
If you notice a new lump, nipple discharge, skin changes or another new breast change, do not wait for a routine screening appointment. Contact a clinician promptly. A new change does not automatically mean cancer, but it deserves evaluation.
